Over 1.8 million
individual travel permit holders from the Mainland visited Macao
The Chief of Social Culture
Department Cui Shi’an Macao Special Administrative Region said since
July last year, the implementation of the Chinese mainland's Individual
Visit Scheme (IVS) on Hong Kong and Macao-bound tours came to help
boost Macao's economy. According to him, IVS transformed the structure
of Macao tourism market while breaking the mainland tourist mode.
Arrivals for Macao in 2003 reached 11.8million, over 50% are from
the mainland, going up 35%. In the first 5 months of this year,
the number soared to 6.43 million, 57% are from the mainland, going
up 95%. On July 1st this year, IVS will cover the whole province
of Guangdong and nine cities in southeast China's Fujian, Jiangsu
and Zhejiang provinces, and bring more visitors to Macao. Macao
takes the source of mainland tourists seriously by establishing
“Task Force on Tourism Consultation for Mainland Market” to collect
views from the tourism sectors to improve the work in providing
qualified services for the tourists .Recently, with the Forum of
pan-Pearl River Delta cooperation and development successfully held,
the whole area is actively working on tourism cooperation. Macao
will continue to work closely with Guangdong province and Hong Kong
to promote the regional tourism of Pearl River Delta through resource
sharing, advantages mutual covering, combined promoting so as to
promote the development of Macao tourist industry.
